Being a parent can be fun, full of laughter, and full of love. It can also be frustrating, challenging and extremely difficult. Everybody has ups and downs, but a nurturing, stable family life teaches our children how to love, how to learn and paves the way to a happy, confident adulthood. Through no fault of their own, some parents are unable to provide this nurturing and stability and this impacts on their children.
What is Home-Start Herts all about? Home-Start are a local family charity that offers emotional and practical support to parents. Families come to/are referred to us when the down days have become overwhelming and they are struggling to keep their head above water.
This may be because they have additional challenges such as a long-term illness, disability, mental health or are feeling isolated and lonely. Our team of trained volunteers are matched with a family, and visit them every week for 2-3 hours. They build trusted relationships and provide focused support that is tailored to the family's individual needs.
Why do we do what we do?
The first 1001 days of a child’s life - from conception to two years are crucial to their future development and wellbeing. Adverse childhood experiences and lack of a nurturing, safe and stimulating environment increase the risk of mental health issues and poor outcomes in later life. Support within the first 1001 days of life – makes the greatest impact on the life chances of a child. The early intervention that we provide really does make a life long difference
